It was really great to have our former Club Professional Andrew Birks come to visit on Monday 11th June and to be to watch an exhibition match vs Steve Jenks.
Steve is playing some of the best squash of his life at the moment. And having had a great run to the quarter finals in the British Open Masters 0.35s last week he knew he was playing really well.
Andrew meanwhile was delayed on his flight from Vancouver and so had had no sleep for 35 hours - just the build up you need before going on court!
Their first rally set the scene - the crowd couldn't believe some of the recovering and shot making both players made ... with the rally lasting about 3 minutes! and being 60+ shots long it was clear we were in for a real treat. At the end of the rally the crowd gasped ... and so did Steve! 1-0 and Andrew was starting to motor!
The rest of the game was filled with great shots and a lot of running from both players but with Steve always having to work harder to stay in contention. A great game played in great spirit ended with Andrew showing why he was a World Top 100 player ... and still is! 3-0 to Andrew.
Steve genuinely enjoyed the chance to play and the crowd were very appreciative of his efforts - great fun!
Andrew then stayed on court to play all comers. Kieran Thomas and Cameron Parry first played him individually and then as 2 on 1 - they 'beat Andrew' 16-14! A great sign for the future! Phil Caudle had a good knock and Charles Cathcart end the play.
After 2 hours continuous play Andrew finally came off court and had a beer and a catch up - and we discussed the possibility of a Club Tour to Canada ... who fancy's that?!
A great evening and many thanks again to Andrew and Steve.
