March 2019 Newsletter

Hello Everyone

It's March already and statistically this is the time of year that most people have given up their new fitness goals for 2019 that they made on New Years and instead people start to think bout what Easter egg they will be wanting. They've been in the shops for weeks now surely its ok to mention it here?

For those of you interested in you can now find the minutes of our committee meetings on the Newsletter section of My Courts where you book courts etc through the website. Once they are agreed by committee members the following month they will be posted for members to read through.

I have to say that since joining the club and being part of the committee, its really interesting to see just how much is invlolved in running the club. A lot of people put a lot of their own personal time and effort to ensure your club runs as well as it does.

For me personally its really made me invest in the club and my squash more. When i started playing squash it was purely for health reasons but since joining Shropshire Squash and seeing the amazing work that the committee as well as coaches and volunteers do, I'm really proud to be able to have a say and an impact on what happens at the club. It's good to see how we are growing and expanding and with this in mind, if you feel that you would like to get invovled with the club more and be part of what makes a difference for others then speak to a committee member about the different roles and ways in which you can help support.

Internal Leagues

The new internal Leagues for March are now on the website for you to check out and start booking your games. Back to the normal timetable with this now where leagues will run monthly. We appreciate your patience over January and February with the court closures.

Shrophire County Closed Event

This year Shrewsbury Squash & Racketball Club is hosting the Shropshire County Closed event. In the past the entry numbers for this competition has been disappointingly low, so this year we have included a Novice Ladies & Novice open tournament for non-team players (similar to our club Nolan Downing tournament, but on a county level), and also an open Racketball tournament. We also have Open O35, O45, O55 & O65 age categories so all members of the club who are interested can enter the relevant categories.

I would encourage all members to enter, as not only is this an opportunity to play people from across the County who you may not know, but also a chance to be in the finals weekend.

Can I ask all members who are entering to speak to their regular squash partners to encourage them to enter as well - This is a tournament for everyone.

The finals weekend will be held on the 4th-5th May, and depending on numbers some matches may be played on the Friday 3rd as well. There will be live music and karaoke.

To sign-up, please follow this link: https://www.sportyhq.com/tournament/view/Shropshire-County-Closed-2019/sign_up

If you have any questions on entry or would like to speak to someone about which categories you should enter, please drop an email to alex.whitehouse@aidfueloils.co.uk

Update on Club Facilities:

The Facilities dept at the School accept that the lighting units on courts 2 & 3 is substandard, as do the lighting suppliers and they are in discussion about rectifying it. The club's position is that the standard of lighting on Courts 2 & 3, should be brought up the the same standard as Courts 1 and 4 and that is what we agreed to co fund. No payment has been made by the Club for any of the work yet and the School accept this. Proposals by the suppliers for rectification, are being made to the School.

An provisional date of w/c 27th May has been penciled in for the Ladies Changing room upgrade - which will mean them being out of action that week. The School have offered ladies changing at the swimming pool changing rooms, if we want replacement changing facilities that week.

The installation of a water fountain at the Club is in the planning and hopefully will be available soon. The proposed fountain will be on the ground floor and mains plumbed for players to access when playing.

Lastly from Monday 5th March we now have two reusable Koolpack hot/cold first aid packs for use by members for soft tissue injuries that require cooling. They are located in the freezer in the kitchen area by the bar.

Ladies Pizza & Prosecco Night 1st March.

It was a very lively evening with 22 ladies attending, 9 of whom were absolute beginners. The coaches put us all through some drills then all had the chance to play 2 matches each.

Our guest military ladies captained the teams with Lucy's team close winners. We celebrated the wins and losses and most of all it was LOTS OF FUN!
