June Newsletter

It's June! It's Sunny! Squash is Back! Boris is married..........

Before lighting the barbecue and having a well earned burger (12 months of being Vegan was tough) we wanted to get June's Newsletter out to you. I get the bank holiday is over but it's a short week for most this week. I mean topday is Tuesday but it feels like a Monday so come Friday it will feel like Thursday but it's not it's a Friday and then this one time, at band camp, a bear came....... to newsletter:

Junior Player of the Month

This months’s JUNIOR PLAYER OF THE MONTH award goes to Vesi Vasileva for a wonderfully positive attitude and some excellent squash skills.
(and at least partly for the most energetic bounce ever seen across the car park on her way to her first post-lockdown club session, thanks for giving everyone a massive, immediate lift)

Vesi took up squash after being introduced to our fantastic sport at the county sponsored primary schools’ trophy event. She has consistently improved and always been incredibly enthusiastic about the junior coaching. She is always very friendly, welcoming new junior club members with a beaming smile and friendly hints. When asked about why she enjoys squash so much Vesi said; “squash is about bonding and working together. We learn together and the coaches are really supportive, they point out things that go wrong in a nice way. We all learn from each other and then we play matches and try to beat the others. It’s great fun!”

Squash is back!

It is now time to start up the competitions again. The first on the calendar is the Junior County Closed. So, calling all members who have children who play squash, now is the time to enter them for the Junior event. It is on 4th July and is being held at SSRC. It is a great and fun event as many of the children testify to. Billy Schur is a typical player and he said "I really love playing squash. I love both the competitive side as well as the social side. It is great fun". Entries can either be made through Ian Tanner at kitanner@hotmail.com or phone 07773753563, or preferably through https://www.englandsquash.com/events

- Look for event 7. Categories are U9, 11, 13, 15, 17, and 19 both boys and girls.

Good luck to all!

Internal Leagues are back!

You may have seen in recent comms from us that the internal leagues are now returning to SSC. Please see below a list of the internal Leagues. We would normally post this online but as you may have seen our site is curently undergoing maintenance. So as well as papercopy in the club, see below for a list of our internal leagues.

The June League will run until 16th July. Matches are to be best of 5. Games scored to 11 or 15 points, decide between yourselves before the game begins which you would prefer to play.

Please bare in mind that with a lot of us returning to Squash it may be safer and better to play to 11 points and keep matches shorter until match fit again. I can say myself that generally I am fit, I have worked hard over the lockdown on my triathlon racing and subsequenty my cardio is good. I can run and bike for hours and I'm fine. My VO2 Max is 69 which for my age is really good. With all of this I thought ahhh I'll be fine going back on court. No issues for me as I've been good. First time back on court I was shattered after 30 minutes. This brings it back to me that squash is tough. It's different to other sports and subsequently takes time to adapt. My squash fitness will come back but like anything to get better you need to do it more.

So when you get back to court, take your time and maybe play to 11, take it easier and ease yourself back in.

The Scoring system remains unchanged from the previous system. To remind you all:

3-0 = 3 points for victor, zero for the loser, 3-1 = 3 points for victor, 1 for the loser etc.

Please can all members remember that:

There are to be no bags left around the centre.
Changing rooms out of use except to use the toilet.
Do not walk into the building with your court shoes on. Change into them before going on court. Only wear non marking soled court shoes.
The next two leagues are for 6 weeks but will revert back to the original monthly format from 1 st September.

If you have any questions please let a committee member know or if it is related the leagues please contact Tony Burgan again at tonyburgan5@gmail.com
