RE: December Newsletter

Hello Everyone

It's ok to say it now...Merry Christmas!! Still too soon? Surely not. We're 18 days away so I'm well within my rights. We hope you've all been enjoying your winter squash recently. One of the best things about Squash in my opinion is that you can play it all year round and you don't have to worry about the changes in weather... unless it snows so bad you can't get out. Then you get what happened in the Shining. In fact maybe that's what drove Jack Torrance crazy in the end? Being stuck indoors without being able to play squash for months is enough to drive anyone crazy. I'm not saying that it would drive me to do the things he did but still I would certianly be in a bad mood..... Ok anyway Merry Christmas!!

Ok firstly some announcements regarding things going on around our club:

Painters are due in for two days over the Christmas and New Year break. They will avoid team matches, junior events and the Severn Hospice event, and we will confirm the exact dates when we know them. No courts will be out of action, but paintwork in the bar area and viewing areas may be wet for a few hours on one or two evenings. The areas of wet paint will be marked. Whilst decorators are in can we try to keep all windows and doors closed to courts in order to keep the dust and fumes out of the courts please. Cheers

Please do not switch off any heaters in the club premises. They are all thermostatically controlled to keep the temperatures at levels recommended by England Squash. The court heaters and also the reception area heaters have, on occasion, been switched off by players at various times over the last month and so courts have been cold when players arrive in the early evening. Leave the heaters alone.

A nespresso machine with many capsules has been kindly donated to the club. It has been tested by the School electricians and is available behind the bar for use by members.

Also we kindly remind all members to not come to the courts in the footwear that you subsequently play in. The court floors are getting marked and dirty. Please bring your playing footwear to the building - do not wear them to the building. If you see anyone doing this give them a good telling off and remind them at all work and no play makes Jack a good boy, all work and no play makes Jack a good boy, all work and no play makes Jack a good boy.

If you haven't seen or read the Shining then this Newsletter will make no sense to you by the way. Just take it that I'm being clever and witty.

There is now an "Information Point" at the Club located upstairs to the left of the bar. This contains pages of information about many aspects of the Club to try to fill in any gaps that members may have, on who is who in the Club and how things work.

With the influx of 90 new members in the last year, it is meant a reference point to share information about the club and what we can provide.

It is a reference point for not just for new members though, and includes information:
On the Committee to Club Coaches
On Mycourts to Club Teams
On The Bar to Club Kit

It will be refreshed as things change but take a look - if there is anything, in your view, that needs to be added or changed, please tell Andrew Black or any member of the Committee (they are listed in the Information Point!). It is for all members to use - so please tell us if it is helpful ... or not ... or how it could be more helpful!

The first round of the Shropshire Junior Super League kicked off in October with competitors from both Shrewsbury clubs as well as Shrewsbury school. It is run as a graded event with points allocated based on final positions within each grade.

There were some fantastic matches. Jaydan Ingram showed good control and some excellent shot-making to beat school pupil Henry Bateson, just after Henry had taken a surprise victory against eventual group winner Fin Aimer. In the B-grade final Marcus Urquhart eventually defeated Izzy Parry in the closest match of the afternoon, while in the C-grade Joe D'Ammassa won all of his matches to take maximum points. The full league table is on the club junior noticeboard.
The next round of the Super League is scheduled to take place on Sunday, 8th December.

Madeira Tour

We have a few pictures from a recent tour some of our members did to Madeira.

A really good Club Tour - Hotel was great, weather fantastic and squash very enjoyable.
Many thanks to the Club for the Club Shirt … we also presented the organiser with a bottle of Shropshire Gin - he was very grateful for both!

Winter Leagues Update

Below we have an update of the current League tables in Division 1 ,2 and 3.

In Division 1 we are currently sitting in 2nd and 4th. Close points between positions 2nd 3rd and 4th so all to play for going into the new year.

In Division 2 our teams have nose bleeds from being so high! 1st and 2nd. With strong points holding temas C and D at the top it's going to be a question of holding on keeping up the momentum. Great acheiviement for both!

In Division 3 we have Andy's G with a silent E team sitting in third. Were sitting in proudly in 2nd until our last game where we were pipped to 3rd place. Strong showings from them (No bias here whatsover)

F team in 7th looking to close the gap on some close points up the ladder.

That's it for now. Thanks for taking the time to read it through to this point. If you gave up with the Newsletter and decided to watch or read the Shining, it's a great isn't it? I feel Christmas may not be the time to talk about the Shining so much but it's snowy in the film so surely that makes it Christmassy? Like Die Hard, that's a Christmas film right? If I don't see Sirius Black being thrown off the Nakatomi Plaza then it's just not Christmas in my opinion.

Ok defitnitely gone off topic now,

Merry Christmas!!

Scott
