January Newsletter

Hello Everyone

We hope you all had a nice Christmas and New Year. Depending on how much you indulged over the holidays will depend on how sluggish you feel getting back on the courts. Last Sunday was a good turn out at the Club Night. Lots of new rackets, clothes and shoes being used for the first time. You can always tell when someone has a new racket as they dont want to risk hitting the wall when you play a tight drive.

Few things coming up and reminders for you all so have a read through and look forward to seeing you on the courts.

Squash 101

Squash 101 night will be on Friday the 1st Feb. It will include a social fun tournament and racketball starter session. This is aimed at League 10 and below players and new members. If you are interested and want to give it a go let Dan Aimer know.

Reminder about Lighting upgrades to Courts 2, 3 &4

As announced in last months newsletter, the lighting on courts 2-4 is due to be upgraded in late January, so please be aware of restricted court availability from the 21st January. As with the improved court flooring work in November 2017, the £6,000 cost of the improved lighting project is jointly funded by the School and the Club and represents a significant improvement in the playing facilities, following a positive response by Ed Moore (School Facilities Manager) to the discussion at the last AGM.

The two other capital projects that are up coming, are the upgrading of the Ladies changing rooms (due in the next three months or so, once tenders have been received) and the installation of a mains water fountain, which does not have a specific date yet, but is planned. Both these two projects are fully funded by the School.

Absent Friends Event

We wanted to say a big thank you to all those who generously donated at the Absent Friends Event. Donations from the club reached £250 which was grately received.

Shropshire Squash Club dominate junior county championships

Shropshire Squash Club dominated the 2018 junior county closed tournament held at the club in December.
Stand out match of the day was in the girls' U11 category where Nia Lincoln fought off a brave performance from Newtown player Lani Pettit to retain the trophy she lifted last year.
Billy Schur and Izzy Parry both proved too strong in the BU11 and GU13 categories respectively, winning without dropping a game while Jaydan Ingram repeated his achievement of last year by doubling up and winning both events he entered - the boys' U13 and U15.
Last year's most improved player, Sophie Wright, produced a mature, controlled display to overwhelm the competition in the girls' U15 event.
There were some very close matches in the boys' U17 round robin. Dan Jones played some excellent squash at times but lapses in concentration left him outside the top two. Morya Wadokar, back playing after a break from the game used his speed and court coverage to eventually take the title, edging out local player Fin Aimer who found his touch and played one of his best tournaments.
Rachel Pritchard was the only entrant in the girls' U17 but was not handed her trophy without a challenge. She was made to play matches against the under 19 boys in a round robin challenge! Her match against Cameron Parry had the watching crowd marvelling at the shot making skills on show and she pushed speed merchant Ali Perkins (who beat Nick Matthew in the court sprint challenge back in September) in two very close games.
Newtown player Matt Kirk edged a thrilling match against Ali Perkins 2-1 to set up a final showdown with Cameron Parry in the boys' U19. They went on court with the mayor watching on from the balcony and Cameron exhibited his full range of shots to take the first game. Matt fought back in the second as Cameron tried too hard to force an early end to proceedings. The players came out for the climax of the tournament and Cameron Parry leaned heavily on his experiences playing in the senior Shropshire league to start strongly. He played with great control and extended the early rallies. As tiredness crept up on Matt, his game became more loose. Cameron held his concentration to see the game out a take the match to the delight of the home crowd.
A fantastic tournament well marshalled by Ian Tanner, photos can be found on the club instagram account at:shropshiresquashjrs

Shropshire F remain at the top with a good margin of points. Fantastic news for Andy Lawrence's "drEam" team that got their first win in December. Just like Guiness, good things come to those who wait Andy.

Good luck to everyone in the internal January Leagues. Remeber December's leagues go up to the 15th January and due to the work being done on Courts 2,3 &4 January's leagues will be extended until the end of February.
