Hello Everyone

Did you know that through April you were all members of England Squash's club of the Month? If you didnt hear about it here's a quick update:

Shropshire Squash Club have been nominated by England Squash as Club of the month for April. This means that out of 700 Registered Clubs we were number 1. This is a huge achievement and one that we don't take lightly.

Friday 26th April saw our 200th member signup to join Shropshire Squash.

This is a tremendous achievement building from the 140 members that we had last September. The growth has been steady and consistent over the last eight months and is continuing….

Through the 60 new members, we have doubled our female membership and we have significantly increased the proportion of members under the age of 40, both of which were key objectives for the Club.

Important drivers have been the 101 programme for new members and new starters; the ladies nights; the improvements in the bar and social areas; and, increased profile of the club through running England Squash Events, the Nick Matthew day and an increased junior programme of events. Thank you, Dan Aimer, Tracy Waldron-Pegge and Ben Schur … and all their helpers and coaches.

We have seen the largest ever entry into the Club championships last month and also the highest number of members taking part in the internal leagues!

We have some great volunteers and helpers so a big thank you to everyone involved. If you think you have something to bring to the table then there are still ways in which you can help support the club and be part of the team that makes our club stand out. If you are interested in helping out speak to a committee member.

On behalf of the entire Shropshire Squash Club Committee we would like to thank everyone who has helped us get the club to this point and to all of our amazing members for making our club number 1.

County Over 65's Team

Regional Intercounty matches took place over the weekend of the 2nd and 3rd March. The Shropshire Over 65's team comprised players all from our club. Richards Ewels, Chris Ferriday and Paul Dixon. They played at Kenilworth.

The first match on day one was against Cheshire. Chris was first on playing at 2. He had too much for his opponent and won 3 - 1. Paul was next on playing at 1, up against an accurate and composed England international player he lost 3 - 1. Richard was at 3 played really well and beat his opponent 3 - 0 meaning we were at a 2 - 1 win for Shropshire.

The second match against Derbyshire. Richard on first at 3 won 3 - 0. Paul had a close game but just lost out in the 5th 15-13. Chris came out and completely out-foxed his opponent 3 - 0. Another 2 - 1 win for Shropshire.

Day 2 saw us playing the host county Warwickshire. They had looked the stronger of the other counties and so it proved. Richard on first at 3 won a long and hard match 3-2. Paul played the best player in the age group at 1 and went down 3 - 0. Chris came out in the final match at 2 and whilst winning 3 - 0 it was by no means easy and he had to have his wits about him. Again 2 - 1 to Shropshire.

So Shropshire go through to the Finals weekend in June as winners of the Midlands group. The team weren't by any means favourites but have really good strength in depth and that was the telling factor.

A fantastic result so far and more news to follow on this. Good luck for the Finals in June.

Summer League Message

Just a quick note to let you know that the Summer League will be commencing from Tuesday 28th May and running every Tuesday until Friday 30th August. It will be 7pm - 10pm with 7 and 8.30pm sessions. It will be timed as per last two years, but handicaps are being introduced for every player this time out.

More information will be sent out on this so make sure you check your emails in the next couple of weeks.

Ladies Night Pizza & Prosecco

Ladies Pizza & Prosecco Nights are now FREE and MONTHLY (3rd Friday) thanks to Squash Girls Can funding from England Squash.

We are attracting many ladies who’ve never played squash before or only played a little, as well as more experienced players. Some are joining in on the mixed 101 nights, some joining the club; look out for more ladies joining the internal leagues too.

Next ladies night is Friday 17th May - contact Tracy WP on 07854 544732 for more info or to book.

Bar Access

We sent out an email last week regarding access to the bar now being open and responsible to all members. Just to remind everyone that there is now a key code box by the bar area (combination 2525 same as the bar door) that contains a key for the door that accesses the kitchen and bar door.

There will be a notice going up which indicates to all members how to open and close the bar area down and we kindly ask that every member takes note of this procedure and if unsure please speak to a committee member.

The idea around allowing everyone access is to increase the social feel of the bar area and open it up to everyone. This means everyone has a responsibility to ensure it is looked after and respected. This is our club afterall and we want it to be used in the most efficient and beneficial way for all members.

If anyone has an old key for the bar area prior to this procedure being put in place if you could leave it in the safe behind the bar please.

Many Thanks

Squash 101

The next date for the Squash 101 is 10th of May. This is open to club members to join in the fun as a good standard of players attend up to leagues 10.

There is free coaching at start of session to improve your squash. It's a chance to meet new members in a great social setting.

Bring a friend and put up a poster at work.
